The A30 has a footprint of 3.5 x 2.3 inches, is less than an inch thick, and weighs around five ounces. That's small and the camera fits into just about any pocket. It's also a rather elegant piece of equipment that's eschewed the square, boxy, milled-from-a-block-of-metal look so prevalent over the past few years in favor of a softer, more rounded design.

The A30 is all matte black and chrome, with an aluminum-alloy body that's lightweight, yet sturdy. All edges are smoothed or curved or both, rectangles have rounded corners, and even the chrome strip that separates the front from the back half of the camera is S-shaped. This is a good-looking camera that also feels right in your hand. The sole drawback of all those rounded corners and edges is that the camera easily tips over when you sit it down. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but it can be annoying.

If you're in the market for an inexpensive camera but don't want to get stuck with a piece of junk, the Nikon L18 might be a satisfying solution.

Many of today's digital cameras offer a bundle of options for budding photographers. You can adjust manual settings, add borders, crop photos and do countless other things with the camera. What if you want something simple though? Some people just want a camera they can take out of the box and start using.

For those people, Nikon's COOLPIX L18 comes ready to start shooting. For a little over $100, users get the camera, supporting software, and a pair of AA batteries. With the camera's internal memory you can take around 81 photographs at the lowest resolution (perfect for email or a computer screen) or three to four images at the highest resolution (easily printable at 11"x14" dependent on cropping). Depending on what kind of shooting you want to do, you may not even need a memory card.

The camera isn't completely basic though. Users do have some on screen editing capabilities, various pre-set photo modes, and some pretty need panoramic stitch options. Other available features are a digital image stabilization and continuous shooting.

JVC’s Everio Cube Style GZ-MC200 Camera

If you start to tremble when you hear “MPEG”, I understand. These different digital compression schemes are confusing to even the folks who come up with the standards. With JVC’s chunky little Everio Cube, JVC has embraced the older DVD-quality MPEG-2 format. Other manufacturers have embraced MPEG-4 because of much smaller file sizes. Sadly, consumer recorders using MPEG -4 standard have, to date, offered a much noisier, lower quality picture.
JVC has embraced the mammoth 4 Gig Microdrive to allow recording videos of high quality. In side-by-side video comparisons, the JVC picture dominated. The very portable Everio has a terrific 10X optical zoom lens with an equally impressive digital zoom and captures images with a 2.1 Megapixels CCD. The camera also boasts many sophisticated digital effects.

Perhaps it is just me, but the “boxiness” of the camera and the unusual swivel struck me as quirky and even a little nuts. While I spent considerable time looking at the fine video and decent stills taken with an Everio, I didn’t have enough hands-on time to really adapt to the unusual form-factor. Vastly smaller than almost all other video recorders, JVC scores points here. But in the digital still camera space, it seemed a little less ergonomically satisfying than I’d hoped.

Canon EOS 20D Digital

You know, I used to like Canon. With the EOS 10D, I had the perfect 6-megapixel camera body that could accept all my EOS lenses. Not for the amateur, this baby was the bad-boy in Canon’s digital line: over the top but not as insane as Canon’s 11-megapixel 1DS. So what did those blessed finks at Canon do? They improved the 10D: upped the CMOS sensor to 8.2 megapixels with less noise and made the new thing twice as fast. With one battery charge, and a huge compact-flash card (never under 1GB cards for the likes of me) you can take pictures from sunrise to sunset without taking a break.

Are the pictures beautiful? Darn it, yes! They’re sharp with more auto-focus options and the breathtaking ability to bang-out 23 consecutive frames at five frames per second. Usually, I extol such achievements, but so enjoyed my beloved 10D, I cannot bear to trade it in. And, with the list price of the new Canon D20 at $1499, I can’t afford to either. Seriously, if you are serious about photography and have a passion for great EOS lenses, there is no excuse for not getting this astonishing masterpiece. Just don’t gloat: I don’t want to hear how happy you are.

The next two cameras are daring and, perhaps, a little crazy: Everio, the new combo camera from JVC, and Samsung’s Digimax V50.

There is a gaping hole in the spectrum of cameras currently available to serious photographers. Digital point-and-shoots flourish like weeds, and DSLRs continue to get better and less expensive. The hole though is found at the price / feature point where photographers need less than a DSLR and more than a simple digicam. Such a camera needs to offer good image quality, decent megapixel count, a high spec lens, fast aperture, clean medium-high ISO noise characteristics, decent handling, and an optical viewfinder. It also needs to provide raw capability.
The new Canon G7 meets most of these characteristics quite well but misses being a truly desirable camera because of its lack of raw capability. Why Canon has decided to remove raw from all of its new non-DSLRs is a mystery. It likely has been done so as not to cannibalize sales from the higher margin DSLR segment, but one really has to wonder at the marketing logic of this approach.
But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Before I launch into a rant, let's look at what the G7 does offer, and what it does well – which is quite a lot.

Canon has announced today three new cameras. Rumoured for a while, the 40D replaces the 30D, but is a much improved model. While the 30D was simply a modest cosmetic facelift over the now three year old 20D, the 40D is almost a brand new camera.
Its main features include a 10.1MP sensor with similar low noise characteristics to the recently introduced 1D MKIII. It has a large 3" rear LCD, 9 cross-type sensor autofocus, 14 bit capture, Digic III, Live View, sensor dust shake, and a remarkable 6.5 FPS for up to 75 frames in Large Fine JPG mode (17 frames in raw). In many ways it would not be unfair to call the 40D a 1D MKIII Light. No, it doesn't have the rugged construction and waterproof seals of the MKIII, but in terms of image quality and high frame rate it is the highest performing Prosumer Canon DSLR yet. The camera will be available with a new kit 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom.
Price will be the same as that of the 30D, and availability is just a few weeks off, in early September.

Digital Mobile Robot

SR04 is a small mobile robot suitable for exploring human habitats unattended. It is controlled by a Motorola HC6811 microprocessor running in an M.I.T. 6.270 CPU card, similar to the commercially available "Handy Board." Two 12-volt DC gear-head motors maneuver the robot in a dual-differential drive configuration, balanced by a non-driven tail wheel caster and powered by a 12 volt 2.2 amp-hour sealed lead acid battery. Sensory input is provided by (in order of priority): front bumper switches, IR collision avoidance, stereo sonar ranging, photo detectors, passive IR motion detection, and shaft-encoder odometry.

This is my fourth robot project, the prior three were constructed with Lego Techniques ® and variously controlled by analog hardware, a New Micros HC6811 Forth CPU, and the "Rug Warrior" CPU card sold in conjunction with Flynn’s excellent "Mobile Robots" book. This design has evolved from those robots and from many long conversations with friend and veteran robot builder Duane Gustavus.

Machine-based photo search involves synthesizing metadata – which can be defined in this case as data that describes the context of photos – by extracting structural features (descriptors) from photo media files, using them to semantically classify the images, and storing the results to enable fast index-based retrieval and organization.

This technology is very promising, but there are major obstacles to deploying it on a large scale. Limited processor performance constrains usage models. And programming complexity limits re-use and increases software development and maintenance costs.

The Intel Digital Home Innovations Team is developing a software framework that will simplify the programming model. Our goal is to make fast photo search capability accessible to developers of third-party applications.
